2023-To Present 4-cylinder information (OM 654)

Have you just purchased a new 2023-Present van? Maybe you’re looking at buying a brand new AWD STO Beast.Below you’ll find info and pictures describing the new 4-cylinder (654) engine and the major differences and hurdles you may encounter.

The new engine comes in 2 variants-Regular offering 168 hp with a single turbo, and the HO (High Output) offering 208 hp with a Two Stage Turbo. Also Both variants are now able to use B20 without issue.

Oil capacity-10 liters or 10.5 quarts. That being said filling the engine to 10.5 quarts may lead to a high oil message as the Oil Level Sensor is insanely temperamental and takes 45 minutes to reset if you have to remove oil do to a accidental over fill. That also leads to the next issue, there is no oil dipstick and unfortunately no way to add one, believe me I have tried.

Fuel Filter-Mounted under the driver’s side of the Van, expect to get diesel on you as the filter never seems to be empty. The Mercedes OEM filter from a dealer will come with everything needed to remove the filter and the new o-rings for the filter. Aftermarket stuff not sure so buy at your own risk.

EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve.)-This engine has 2 EGR valves, one  High pressure one in the front and one Low pressure one in the back of the engine, and no you can’t clean these as they aren’t like the traditional EGR valves most Owners are used to from the 3.0  (om642 v6).

Transmission-The transmission that is accompanied with the 4-cylinder is the 725.0. This Transmisson offers 9 gears of sweet sweet shifting and plenty of get up and go.It is probably one of the “smartest” transmissions MB offers as it has AI enabled repair guidance (IPR) which helps dealerships repair them correctly the first time. The only downside I have seen is the whole pan is the filter,so a transmission service is more expensive and requires special tools to make sure the fluid level is correct.
